Tips to Extend Your Keratin Treatment

Have you ever tried a keratin treatment?

I personally tried it, and it was truly amazing! My hair went from dry and frizzy to smooth and soft, in just a few hours. My hair color also became deeper and more vibrant, a far cry from my previous washed-out hairstyle.

Unfortunately, not all of us, including me, have the time or resources to get this hair treatment whenever we want, so here are some tips to prolong your keratin treatment!

  1. Wait until you wash your hair

Like many other hair treatments, keratin treatments last longer if you don’t wash them out immediately after your salon session. Your stylist will probably advise you not to wash your hair for the next three days, and you better follow that advice if you want to keep your hair looking great!

Aside from that, you should also minimize hair washing in general if you have keratin-treated hair. At the most, you will need to wash your hair 3 times a week, for maximum longevity of your treatment.

  1. Use specialized brand treatment products

If you wash your hair, make sure to use products that are specifically designed for keratin-treated hair. Again, your brand will likely recommend good products.

Make sure to find a conditioner line that has everything you need to maintain your hair for the next 10 to 12 weeks, such as an anti-frizz shampoo, anti-frizz conditioner, hair serum, and conditioning hair masks.

  1. Avoid swimming in pools or beaches

Beachgoers are going to be really sad about this, but it's best to avoid beaches or even just swimming pools if you have recently treated hair.

For one, water, in general, can strip away the protective layers of your hair and make it more susceptible to breakage. Especially if your hair has been pre-treated, it's more likely to be damaged by friction and your environment.

Second, the chlorinated water in pools can “undo” the treatment that was applied to your strands during the keratin treatment. Why spend money on a treatment if you’re not even going to maintain it, right?

And finally, seawater is not good for your hair. Have you ever tried to go for a swim in the sea and come out with horribly dry, hard, sticky hair that refuses to be styled no matter how hard you try? That's because all the salt content in seawater can be very overwhelming (and therefore very drying) for your hair.

  1. Deep condition still

Treated hair also needs to be moisturized. It is also prone to dryness and daily external aggressors. That is why it is essential that you include deep conditioning in your weekly hair care routine. Try to stick to products that are specifically designed for use on keratin-treated hair.
